What do I need to bring?

Your bike:

1.  If your bike hasn't been used for some time, check it works, particularly the brakes and if in doubt have it serviced at your local bike shop.

2.  Pump up the tyres as hard as you can, with a good bicycle pump.   Get them hard enough so that you cannot depress the side of the tyre when you press it with your thumb.  Cycling is easier on correctly inflated tyres and there's less chance of punctures.   Mount the pump on the bike.

3.  Set the saddle at the right height. Sit on the saddle and put both your feet down.  At the very most the ball of your foot and toes should touch the ground.  Any lower than this and cycling will be much harder work than it need be.

4.  When you're feeling more confident try raising the saddle gradually until only the tips of your toes touch the ground in this position. Then when you stop while riding all you have to do is slip off the saddle to put your foot on the ground.

To wear:

1.  Your usual outdoor clothes for the day's weather forecast.

2.  Bring a light rain jacket.

To carry:

1.  A bottle of water or other drink.   A snack if you don't intend to use the refreshment stop.

2.  A good bike lock, such as a strong chain or a D-lock. We will be stopping at a park or cafe where your bike may be untended. Remember Bristol has a high rate of bike theft.

3.   A Bristol cycle map - to see where you're going and where you've been.

4.   If you like to take photos, don't forget your camera!
